Rotational Grazing Without New Fence: Moving Cattle with the CattleShield™ Collar

Cow wearing a CattleShield™ Collar grazing on pasture

This is an illustrative scenario that shows how the CattleShield™ Collar is designed to work. It describes no specific customer, and it reports no results.

The problem: fence that never stays where the grass is

Picture a grazing operation that wants to rotate its cattle through smaller paddocks, rest pasture between grazings, and keep the herd off a creek bank and away from a hayfield. Doing that with wire means building cross-fence, checking it, and moving it as grass and conditions change. Every new boundary costs time and money, and a fence built in spring may be in the wrong place by late summer.

The approach: a satellite virtual fence on the cow

The CattleShield™ Collar is a satellite virtual-fencing collar for cattle. It guides cattle with cues and monitors the herd. Instead of building a new line of wire, the producer sets the boundary for the collar.

  • Sized for cattle. The Collar is for cattle from 150 to 1,800 kg live weight, and the Collar weighs up to 1.2 kg.
  • Solar-charged. No battery replacement.
  • Cues. The Collar uses a sound cue to guide cattle back from a boundary. It can also use an electric pulse cue, which is off by default and is enabled country by country.
  • Monitoring. While it guides the herd, the Collar also monitors it.

How a rotation might run in this scenario

Splitting a big pasture

The producer draws a boundary that splits one large pasture into smaller paddocks. Cattle graze one area while the rest recovers.

Protecting the creek bank and the hayfield

Areas the herd should stay out of, such as a creek bank or a hayfield, are set as boundaries too, without stringing temporary wire along them.

Moving the line as conditions change

When the grass is grazed down, or the weather turns, the producer moves the boundary to open the next paddock, rather than pulling posts and rebuilding fence.

What about calves?

The CattleShield™ Tag is a calf tag (30–500 kg) that goes with the CattleShield™ Collar as a pair when needed. When paired with a Collar, it monitors cow–calf distance and alerts on separation. It works alongside your official ID tag.

Planning checklist

  • Map the paddocks you want to rotate through and the areas to keep cattle out of.
  • Confirm each animal is in the Collar's 150–1,800 kg range.
  • Decide whether calves need a paired CattleShield™ Tag.
  • Pick the build window that lands Collars before turnout.
